Gil Mortio, the guitar player of my band, proposed to do a video clip on one of the tracks. He asked me if I had any idea about it. I wrote him a script. We did not use it for the video clip, wonder why, but I used it in a song instead! The script (Projection Of A Direction - part II':
'I'm on a motercicle with a screaming engine and jump over 20 cars in fire with a superman cape. Meanwhile a goldon dragon flyes by. I shoot it in the eye with my giagantic hand cannon. The dragone says : 'Hey man, what's wrong with you?' but leaves me -much to my luck- alone. Anyway, he would not have followed me where I am going. Landing on the ground fire comes from underneed the huge, growling machien underneed me. The fire transformes into beautiful flowers. When they open, beautyfull women are in it. In close up we see they are actualy hiddious insects. They start to fly and land on my guitar I was holding and playing during the entire scene. When they walk on the neck of the guitar they move the golden strings and it makes a guitar solo so gigantic as I have never heard in my life. White devine light comes from behind and the insects disapear in my ears nostrils! I'm surounded by light with the superman cape and I sing ...
Next thing I know a TV screen explodes. Glass flyes around but I dodge it. It seems the light gave me devine capabilitys. Nothing can stop me anymore. I walk out the door into the street. There is no light but I can see everything clear as in daylight. Much to my surprice I hear music of incredible power. I look around and see a bandstand with four musicians playing incredible music. I have shivers on my back and realise the play my music. My music! A see a empty place on the stage and the guitar player waves at me holding my guitar with the golden strings. I take it from him and hit the strings, a howling sound...'

Bruno Vansina (ss, as, fl, kb, v) staat bij het jazzpubliek vooral bekend als lid van het VVG Trio, waarmee hij tot vandaag twee cd's en één dubbel-cd uitbracht. Met Nirvana Bonus and the Demons of Shame komt hij voor het eerst met een cd onder eigen naam naar buiten. Hij wordt erop bijgestaan door Gilles Mortiaux (gt, v), Peter Vandenberghe (kb), Pierre Vervloesem (b, v) en Teun Verbruggen (dr). Het is een cd waarmee Vansina in elf door hemzelf geschreven songs en instrumentaaltjes lijkt te mikken op de luisteraars van Studio Brussel. 'What's wrong with you', het beresterke openingsnummer, zou het alvast goed doen op de radiozender. Het is een compacte rocksong die niet had misstaan op het album No More Heroes van The Stranglers. Een herhaalde reeks 'lalala's' en een verschroeiende saxsolo geven aan het nummer echter een onconventionele draai. En die aanpak is kenmerkend voor de hele cd, die een bonte mix van stijlen bevat: rock, jazz, pop, funk, impro, noise, enz. Gecontroleerde waanzin lijkt het motto van de groep. 'Music is my game and I'm a singing man' klinkt het dan ook ironisch op het groteske, met tekenfilmstemmetjes doorspekte 'Nirvana Bonus', dat zo uit de grillige maar geniale koker van wijlen Frank Zappa had kunnen komen. Diens muzikale en tekstuele invloed is trouwens in wel meer nummers hoorbaar. Het pleit dan ook voor een jazzmuzikant met naam als Bruno Vansina dat hij eindelijk de cd heeft durven te maken die blijkens de begeleidende perstekst al lang in zijn hoofd zat. Een cd waarop hij uiteenlopende stilistische invloeden verwerkt tot een homogeen klinkende mengvorm met een hoog nonsensgehalte, die zowel op de lach- als op de beenspieren werkt. [Patrick Auwelaert]
